I'm writing this review because I feel compelled to give the most accurate image of OSU as possible. As a new transfer student, I wasn't completely sure what to expect coming to OSU before I came here. Being from the Long Island area of New York, OSU doesn't get quite get the academic and social credit of other well-known schools in the Northeast/Midwest such as Michigan, Penn State, Wisconsin, Miami U., BC, Maryland, GWU and Cornell.

However, I think that this school is better than most of the major private/non-Ivy League schools in the North East, and definitely better the SUNY system schools because of its great location, dedicated faculty (I'm not talking about TA's, that's a different story), the price you pay for your education (even for an out of state student like myself) and the limitless activities you can do in Columbus (it's not NYC or DC, but those cities are so expensive that they're not really made for college students anyways).

The major difference is that unlike those schools, OSU gets most its students from Ohio and the rest of the Midwest. While some may see that as a downside, I see it as refreshing, since it was my purpose to escape those snobby North East people. This school is big, VERY BIG, so if you're looking for your hand to be held during your college experience, don't come here. Aside from that, I have been impressed with pretty much everything I've seen here, except for the occasional hiccups in doing administrative work (Ex. finding an on-campus job, getting your Buck ID to work properly). But overall, I wouldn't change a thing, and I'm ultimately happy that I transferred to OSU from my previous school, a small liberal arts college in California, which was nowhere near as fun and enjoyable as OSU has been.

Some pieces of advice. If you can, take all of your math and science courses at your local community college. The math department at OSU sucks, because they give you 50 minutes to take a test that is nowhere near finishable in that amount of time. And if you have to take a math class, try signing up for night courses, because even though they are two hours long, they are actually taught by a full time professor, two days a week. With science classes, they are almost always easier at your local CC.
The two best programs at OSU are 1. Business, and 2. Engineering. If you decide to major in any one of these programs, you are definitely getting your money's worth. As a Business student, the Fisher College of Business is a mini campus on the north part of OSU's campus, with brand new buildings with state of the art facilities (we have a business library with an up-to-the minute stock ticker)! The career services staff does a good job of helping students critique their resume's, and in their job search. Also, Fisher has lots of Business related clubs (i.e. Undergraduate Finance Association), which will make your job search even easier because you will be bound to make some contacts along the way.
Sports are huge, and most of the teams at OSU are either good or great. Football is obviously king here, with everyone in central Ohio pretty much idolizing Jim Tressel and everyone else on the team. Basketball is also exciting, with Thad Matta coaching the team and making the sport more popular than it has been in a long time (but don't confuse us as a basketball school like Duke, UCLA, or UNC). Everyone has tons of school spirit, and you either grow to love it or hate it (I personally love it, since I never saw any of that at my old liberal arts school).

Ohio State is a HUGE school. It has 5 bus routes within the campus, so better build up stamina to walk if you have a tendency of going late to class. Infrastructure is good. Every college has their own pre-requisites. Don't get excited if you get admission to OSU. Seek info first about your intended college. Office of International Affairs are one of the slowest people on the world and even the academic advisers are extremely hard to reach. So when you write am e-mail to them expect an average wait-time of 2 weeks. As for the Business degree, you will have a lot of General subjects that need to be taken first. The main program is just 2 years in length. Housing on North Campus is the best. PLEASE DO NOT CHOOSE A QUAD SHARING ROOM. Campus dining services are good enough. Surrounding city is very very small with nothing to do. Once you leave campus its all over. If you are a party animal, get used to boring house parties with music played through "youtube" on a laptop. This university has a lot of students from a country background so... don't expect super-cute girls. Good luck

If you want a big school, go here. If you want school pride in the form of athletics, go here. If you want to be in a big city, go here.

I'm in love with OSU football and wanted a huge school so it seemed like a good fit.

Ohio State really is a "top tier" public university. I seriously believe that an undergraduate at this school will get an education equal to that at Berkeley, William & Mary, Virginia, UNC, etc. The facilities are top notch and the faculty tends to be very good. I've yet to come into contact with a lackluster professor.

The departments in which I spend most of my time (history and political science) are phenomenal. Internationally renowned scholars abound in both. You're learning from the best at an institution like this.

Perhaps most importantly, OSU has the second-biggest alumni network in the entire country. It is a very recognizable name and every potential employer I've spoken too loves to say, "Oh yeah, I worked with a great guy from Ohio State" or "my boss went to Ohio State, he's doing really well for himself." While not an Ivy degree, it does carry a good amount of weight and should open doors after graduation.

If you aren't dirt poor, don't expect work-study and don't expect to get a job on campus outside of Ohio State Calling or food service for the first year. Everything is work study except those two and the occasional lab job that requires you to be a sophomore or junior.

Bikes get stolen a lot on campus and some TAs don't care or have no idea what they talking about.

Then my sister also had an experience where she was told she could graduate and she received her diploma. A few days later she was told that she did not have enough credits to graduate so she made an appointment with her counselor. Turns out that she had graduated. It would be nice if the school could get their information straight.

Unless you are obsessed with Ivy, an OSU education is widely recognized. There are elite private schools that no one has heard of where students can't find jobs. Employers respect OSU, and it has opened doors for me even outside the state of Ohio.

Since it is such a huge campus it may mean that you will need to take initiative in seeking out resources, academic help, career guidance, etc. But the great thing about its size is the number of opportunities, extracurricular activities, clubs, traditions, people, etc. There is something for every single student to get involved in something they feel passionate about, so get involved! Coming from a high quality college prep high school, most of the general education classes have been very easy but the upper level engineering classes have been very difficult. If you don't feel challenged enough, chose the honors route, which is comparable to the nation's top notch universities. Basically, there is a solution for any negative comment about OSU but it is up to the student to find his/her best fit and the resources to help them get past any disappointing aspects of the school.

Because Ohio State is so very large, there is quite a variety. You will get a mixture of friendly and helpful professors, but just as many arrogant and unhelpful professors. Most of the staff in departments, especially financial aid, do not care. I have found the history department to be extremely helpful, whereas the English department (my former double major) was not at all. To be frank, Ohio State is a research institution. That is all that they are interested in because it will bring more glory to them. BEWARE IF YOU WANT TO BE A TEACHER! MAKE SURE YOU SEE WHAT THEY REQUIRE. SOMETIMES THEY MAKE YOU GET YOUR MASTER'S FIRST AND NO SCHOOL WILL HIRE YOU BECAUSE THEY ARE REQUIRED TO PAY YOU MORE WHEN YOU START!!!! If you are not interested in research, I would advise you to pick another school. Otherwise, it is the best choice in Ohio. Just be careful not to be absorbed and become egotistical like everyone else.

I cannot believe the people who comment negatively about Ohio State and how they prepare students for the real world. Ohio State is the ultimate "real world" experience. By the time you are 18 you don't need someone, let alone an institution, to hold your hand. Go out and do something and experience the environment. If you are on here complaining about your education/social life/amenities, etc go out and do something about it. While you are sitting here ripping a university that has opened doors for thousands upon thousands of people, the students who get the most out of their time here are out meeting people, forming relationships, and figuring out where they want to go in life and ultimately end up happier and more in tune with the way life works outside of the comfort of university life.

As with an436 other college, OSU is what you make of it. Basically, there is a solution for any negative comment about OSU but it is up to the student to find his/her best fit and the resources to help them get past any disappointing aspects of the school.

Ohio State is a HUGE school. It has 5 bus routes within the campus, so better build up stamina to walk if you have a tendency of going late to class. Infrastructure is good. Every college has their own pre-requisites. Don't get excited if you get admission to OSU. Seek info first about your intended college.

The Honors program attracts some of the best students in the nation, and taking classes with that top tier of students gives you all the challenges you would ever seek. If you do not get in initially, anyone with a 3.5 can apply for admission in their first year.

OSU has pros and cons just like any other university.
If you want a big school, go here. If you want school pride in the form of athletics, go here. If you want to be in a big city, go here.
I'm in love with OSU football and wanted a huge school so it seemed like a good fit. However the staff is unhelpful. I was told to sign up for classes first quarter my freshman year that I didn't even need. I failed a class due to the fact that is in place JUST to weed out pre-health students. The honors program is terrible, lots of extra work for no real reason, just a word on your diploma. My professors were mainly arrogant, and the TA's either didn't care or couldn't speak proper English. My friends are amazing though, and all in all I'm glad I go to OSU.

If you receive anything from this school during admission process, save it. If they tell you how your previous credits will transfer, save it. They told me that my Japanese would transfer as Japanese 101, 102, and 103. Turns out that without the letter, they couldn't give me the credit. Not to mention that if you are a type two from attending other colleges, OSU will still treat you as a freshman but deny you stuff like freshman forgiveness.
Be prepared for people working jobs that they don't know how to do. Lose your buck ID and you're screwed. The dorm staffs don't know what they are doing and most likely the temporary cards are demagnetized. The dorm staffs have had this problem before, but they don't do anything to remedy it. Double check everything twice.
If you aren't dirt poor, don't expect work-study and don't expect to get a job on campus outside of Ohio State Calling or food service for the first year. Everything is work study except those two and the occasional lab job that requires you to be a sophomore or junior.

It's a large campus so there's diversity. However, I would not have come here if I knew the trouble of transferring credits from post-secondary options. Anything the university sends you in regard to your credits, save it. If they tell you something in regards to scheduling or your major, write it down along with the person's name and date.

Because Ohio State is so very large, there is quite a variety. You will get a mixture of friendly and helpful professors, but just as many arrogant and unhelpful professors. The entire school is surrounded by what I refer to as the "Ohio State Bubble." Because everything is centered around THE Ohio State University in all of its football glory, I would not be surprised if you could not see the egotistical mania that has absorbed the students.

I was an Evolution major at OSU, but that was not an option on the menu for this site. My major course work was fantastic and the professors were superb, helpful teachers. I completed a good deal of undergraduate research and got good letters of rec for grad school. Research opportunities are abundant, but not all of them are positive experiences. Drama and unprofessional attitudes were revealed by a catty staff and faculty, in a department rife with hatred. Look out! The politics will get you! Like anywhere you need to work to be noticed. Chemistry, math and physics classes are required, of course, and all of them contain hundreds of students and a few clueless, foreign TA's. You will struggle through these subjects unless you are already a master at them prior to taking them. Its a nightmare.
The dorms were horrible. Overpriced, full of over tanned girls with pink colored shades and white lip gloss and a bunch of racist, meat-head hicks that chant "Go Bucks" at every opportunity. If you don't love country everything and football isn't your life, don't attend. Most of the people you meet will drop out or change their majors to something easier. Columbus is nice enough, but the buses stop running early if you want to escape campus. Good Luck!

I love attending Ohio State, because you have the chance to do absolutely anything there. I am from a small town in Ohio a few hours away from Columbus and I was interested in experiencing new things; OSU was a great school to go to for me. People talk about how big the school is and how they would feel like a number, but I have never gotten that feeling. For the most part I have had excellent professors... and I do mean professors. As an example, my freshman year I had a rudimentary geology class with a tenured prof who had just returned from doing research in Antarctica, and has had many of her works published. I have been quite happy in Columbus, and would say don't let the size of the school intimidate you.

I spent one year at Ohio State, and promptly transferred out. To this university, you are no more than a number, a single piece in this horrible system. Sure, the sports are great, until you get stuck up in the nosebleeds with other first, second, and third year students and realize that there really isn't a true "student section" like other major schools.
The education here is below-average, and definitely not worth the money as an in or out of state student. I could have gotten a similar education at my local community college for more than half the price.
People here are closeminded, all from Ohio, wear a baseball cap, and are interested in nothing but drinking themselves into oblivion every weekend. You have the honors students who are the exact opposite and never come out of their rooms, but there doesn't seem to be a good middle-ground in terms of social life.
Don't expect to get any help from professors. Many of the TAs don't speak very good English, and therefore, it is very difficult to learn anything from them. The lectures are massive, and classes really don't get much smaller when you get into the upper levels.
When I looked at college reviews, I concentrated too much on the good aspects and not on the negative reviews. If you have any kind of drive to learn from a top-notch institution, do not attend OSU. They gave me a scholarship to get me to go there, but in hindsight, I would have dismissed it immediately. Don't go here!!

I came here from a smaller town and was scared at first because I knew no one here and the university seemed really big. It was really easy to meet people, they all seemed very nice and easy to talk to. There are a TON of things to do everyday. It really does seem like there is something for everyone to do. Some people may think that football and partying is the only thing to do here, but they are wrong. I personally don't party at all and I still have a wonderful time here. The city is also very pretty and it seems pretty safe for a big town. I would highly recommend coming here if you are considering it. Don't let the size scare you, it really is a wonderful college.

The best thing is the opportunities... Both in engineering projects such as the fastest hydrogen fuel cell car in the world (Buckeye Bullet), Baja, etc and with everything else associated with the school: clubs, classes, activities.

Here is a useful bit of information. Ohio State is on the west side of high street, across the street from all the bars. It took me three years to figure that out.

Be careful when choosing OSU for college. Not only does Ohio
have the most expensive instate tuition; the teachers are
not helpful at all. I am transferring to another college
after 2 years. I felt like I wasted time at OSU.
Also this university has a disregard for student safety.
A student died in an dorm elevator accident. There were many
complaints about the elevator before the accident. Also,
other elevators were on campus were found to be unsafe.
It's all about profit for the university.

Some people are intimidated by the large size of OSU, but really I think that's it's strongest point. Half the students can go home for the weekend, and campus is still a happenin' place. There are always a million things to do, and if you're in the honors program, the classes are plenty challenging. At first I didn't want to come to OSU, but now that I'm here, I'm very glad I did. Feel free to contact me about more - I'd say more but I have a lot of other essays to write and I'm tired!

I transferred to OSU a year ago from out of state, I transferred here because of a very good allied med major and also having relatives that went to medical school here I heard a lot of great things especially when it comes to medicine/allied med/public health. The school has everything! Every resource, any club, sports, an amazing 40million dollar rec center that just opened up this year! The tuition is a big pricy for a public state school. (around 10K for in state and 20K for me!) I don’t know how it is in the general courses but in our school where you actually have to get accepted into the program most people are a bit different then the general crowd. Everyone is truly interested in their field of study. OSU has greatly changed its undergraduate population in the last few years, in 2006 they accepted their "brightest" class(in regards to test scores and gpa). Many programs are top ranked and an OSU degree is respected by employers. Now there are many idiots in the school that come to party but they usually get weeded out in the general courses.
I can not think of any other place that is more ideal for a college education. Ohio State has offered me unboundless opportunities on a beautiful campus, in a great city. I have not met (nor heard of) one student that dislikes going here. Each and every one of the students here is incredibly friendly and approachable. Even though the students are aplenty, the class sizes remain small (only one or two major lecture classes in first year). The academics are stimulating and interesting, something I did not especially expect coming into a university of this size. Ohio State offers incredible academic support...I have never gone into a class not understanding any of the material. The professors here are top-notch and truly care about their students.
The school spirit here and the tradition are contagious, as people are overflowing with spirit for the Buckeyes. The athletic programs are great, with a beautiful RPAC (recreation center) and a newly built McCorkle Aquatic Center. The Horseshoe is one of the most exciting venues in all of college football. With everything that this school has to offer both inside and outside the classroom, I cannot fathom any parent who would be ashamed if their child chose to attend The Ohio State University, one of the fastest rising and finest universities this country has to offer. This truly is a special place.
I really like the quarter system. Right when you start to get bored with a class, it ends. There are so many programs here and the faculty is well known in their fields. I HATE partiers, so that’s been tough for me, as far as I'm concerned most of the people on campus can walk in front of a bus. But that doesn’t take anything away from the opportunity that the University can provide.
I transferred here from a school in Florida, and it was a great decision. I got involved upon arrival, and now have many more, better friends than I had in Florida. The core classes are very easy, all one has to do is attend and pay attention. As stated by many others, I'm sure, the coursework is not mind-boggling (unless you're engineering, but that's universal) and you can do little or much with your college education. OSU is a pretty good state school and has only increased its academic prowess as of late. I'd recommend this school to anyone.
Great variety of majors and programs, challenging curriculum, great social life, good bar scene beautiful campus (though sometimes it feels too big), tremendous school spirit
Ohio State has a wonderful nursing program and I highly recommend it! I was somewhat less pleased with the structure of some of the GECs (for example, I couldn't understand the English of any of the TAs that I had for chemistry), but once getting in my major, things improved. There is only 120 students in my nursing class and there is a lot of individual attention. I'm also in the honor's program and that has been a wonderful experience. The campus is large, but it begins to feel quite small by your 2nd year!
I received my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from OSU in 2000 and my Master's of Social Work also from OSU in 2003. I cannot say enough wonderful things about OSU. A lot of people feel as though the largeness of the school is a detriment, I disagree. Because we are one of the largest universities in the United States there is an incredible amount of diversity and a million things to do. The people here are unbelievably friendly. And unlike a lot of universities, Greek life does not rule the social scene at all. Going Greek is certainly an option but not at all a necessity. I was extremely shy in high school and really feel as though I blossomed at OSU. Certainly a large part of that was getting older and more confident in myself but I also think that the atmosphere at OSU cultivated a lot of my growth. Also, the academic standards at OSU have greatly increased. Yes, we are a state school and not an Ivy League but I have met some truly brilliant people here. Overall, the best way to decide about OSU is to take a weekend and tour the campus, hang out at local bars and coffee houses, don't be afraid to talk to the students. We are very friendly and we like to talk :)
If you want to attend the Ohio State University, you need to come here with an open mind that is prepared to meet all different types of people. It is a great place to party, but you have to work as well. OSU is no longer a "cake" school, and they are trying to prove it with every single class they bring in.
I would say that if you're going to college to have fun then you could probably do this anywhere, including OSU. However, you can be expected to have to deal with a variety of different people before you really find the people you'll truly have fun with.
As far as academics, you would be surprised at how many of your professors are foreign. This was not a problem for me personally, but just about everyone I know has had at least one major conflict with having a professor or TA that simply could not convey the material well because of the language barrier. Should you *have* to deal with this issue paying the price you are for this degree? Maybe not, oh and you'll probably get sick of the "O H"..."I O" cheer really fast.
The school cares more about football than education. there are no clocks in 50% of classrooms. There are no pencil sharpeners in the art building. the equipment used in biology is from 1968 and held together by duct tape. the dorms are to small and for each person(when i was there)paid 600 a month for a one bedroom dormroom with living area and bathroom. that’s $2400 a month for a one bedroom apartment without a kitchen. never room 4 to a dorm room, you live like sardines. you can never see a professor so don't try. grad students teach you, and they don't speak English most of the time, there notes are in their native tongue. the chemistry department can't count, they were a 100 exams short for final and had to make everyone wait an hour without being able to cram because exams had already been passed out. People walk on the street by hundreds but knowone ever says a word, if you do everyone thinks you are crazy. You can hear a pin drop. And make sure you can run a 5min mile; you'll need it to get to classes. the campus is that big. And no most students can't drive. They don't have enough spaces.
Well, it is a rather large school, but don't let that fact alone pin you underneath its weight. Resources are abound within the campus, and the professors are generally enthused about the subject matter that they "profess" unto eager minds. The campus is well-maintained and exudes a sense of brevity and purpose, which does seem to contrast with the daily bustle of students traversing between classes. On any given day, you're likely to be swarmed by an endless mass of unfamiliar faces, but therein lies the true beauty of this school: the diverse student population truly makes for a niche for every interest. Additionally, the Honors Program is recommended for those who strive to become the best (University-wide priority scheduling and the option to live in Taylor Tower solidifies this as a wise choice.)

The Ohio State University is an amazing school with tons of opportunities. It is, obviously, a recognizable name that represents its students, graduates, and professors for their lifetime. Having The Ohio State University on any transcript is great? Just wait. But, you have to understand that there is no room for mistakes. You can't mess around with your classes; you have to give them all of your attention regardless of what program you are in. Quarters are nice and short, but sometimes that leaves no time for you to bring your grades back up. So, remain a serious student and you should be fine. Also, even though this one of the biggest schools in the United States, it doesn't feel all that different than the tiny private high school I attended or the small community college I went to first. You can still meet and get to know as many people as you wish just stay open-minded and approachable. You can make college the experience you want it to be. Overall in terms of choosing Ohio State as MY school, it was the best decision I've ever made. I love it; no ifs, no ands, no buts.

Ohio State is a big university, so until you take upper level courses, you will have very crowded classrooms. Even in many upper level class's, still expect to have a few with several hundred students.
The Honors courses i have taken are very challenging and demanding, so if you want to be pushed to your limits, enroll in one. it will look good on your transcripts as well--if you do well.

Going to OSU was the best decision I've ever made. I have 15-20 good friends that went to other schools throughout the US and they all regret their choice for one reason or another. I don't know why anyone in Ohio would go to another school. The US News and every other major rankings index puts OSU #1 IN EVERY CATEGORY, from the school as a whole to all of its individual programs. The respect garnered for OSU is ubiquitous throughout the world, and the alumni network is fantastic. Other schools in Ohio (namely Miami and OU) think that they are on par or better than OSU, but when you get down to it they don't have nearly as many resources as OSU and the quality of their individual programs doesn't even come close. Plus, Columbus is on of the best cities to live in countrywide, and the resources available to students abound. You get great experience and you aren't closed off from the real world like most of the other schools in the state. And you also don't have to make your parents take out a second mortgage to pay for school. Even with the size of the school, there is a real sense of family and everyone is happy to be Buckeye. Potential employers also rate OSU tops in the state and always give preference to OSU grads. Simply put, if you have the opportunity to go to OSU, take it; it will be the best decision you ever make.

If you care about your future at all and/or expect to learn something during your four years of college, don't go to OSU. I was in the Honors program and it was ridiculous how little people cared about learning. The teachers know the students don't care about anything except partying every night so they don't bother to teach anything meaningful. What a waste of my time. Also a waste of money; I got a full scholarship, but the education I got there wasn't even worth the gas money to drive down to Columbus.

Don't be afraid of the size of this school. Yes, it is big, but it doesn't have to be. If you get involved, you won't be just a number. I've never felt that I was insignificant here. It's a big school with a big heart.

OSU is a great school. Whatever you want, you should be able to find it here. There are all kinds of people, all kinds of classes, at every level. Classes too easy? Do the Honors program, or take a bunch of 500+ level courses. Too hard? Take something a bit easier, and visit the TA or Prof a lot. Because the university is so big, they have to provide a great variety of stuff. While I haven't always had great experiences at OSU, in the end, I'm very glad I came here.

Contrary to popular belief, Ohio State has a good academic program. It also carries a crazy social lifestyle. This may be a bit much for those that don't agree with this kind of lifestyle, but it isn't the only option. There are many different organizations to get involved with, including some good religious organizations. The city is also a nice complement to the school.
